Desires Better Unsung: Puppet, From The Depths, Crypt Kicker, Six Feet Under, Manowar

Banner 10/30/99, Flying Machine, Lorain, Ohio

Hello!
Here is a short review of the show that we (does not matter who) attended this last Sunday. The show once again took place at Flying Machine (it seemingly becomes a tradition). First of all we had Puppet, which I assume is a local band. Total shit, total shit, total shit!!!

Fortunately, they did not play long enough to bore me to death. Then, all of the sudden, I spotted some folks belonging to From The Depths camp moving some equipment towards the stage, which was very strange, because they were not scheduled to play at all that night. However, after some short tune up they did play a somewhat short set, which did not even include my favorite "Bereavement". I also must note that for whatever reason they played as a 3-piece that night missing both bass and keyboard player. This fact certainly affected their performance, but I still liked them! In the end of their set they yet once again played Metallica's "Creeping Death" (?) with some big corpse-painted guy taking over vocalist's duties. After them Crypt Kicker hit the stage. It was my first acquaintance with one of Cleveland's favorite bands and I have to admit they are pretty good. Not exactly my kind of metal, but still pretty solid and, certainly, far above average KORN-Pantera-Machine Head clones currently polluting the scene. Liked their vocalist too - guy has a helluva of stage presence! SIX FEET UNDER... What can I say? They just fucking killed! It was the biggest surprise of the night, especially as I expected them to be total shit, according to everything I had heard about them in the past, including their music and their (his - Chris Barnes') personality.
I knew they play brutal death metal and as Chris Barnes used to growl in Cannibal Corpse for a while I thought it would be something in the same vein (and I don't like Corpse said at least). However, it turned out to be quite a different experience. What I saw was very powerful, energetic and tight performance and what really made the difference is the fact that the majority of their songs are played mid-tempo unlike, say, Cannibal Corpse. All in all, what a nice surprise! Manowar... After Six Feet Under played their set a lot of people left the building, which made me laugh thinking how stupid they were leaving right before The Best band, Kings of Metal started to play.

Other bands play, Manowar kills, you know! However, around 60-70 minutes later I realized how stupid I was believing in all the hype given to Manowar during their long and ugly career. First of all, it took bastards way toooo long to get on stage, I was actually ready to go when they finally appeared in the cloud of shit. They played VERY LOUD, which is completely pointless INHO, because if your music is shit it certainly won't help you to make it any better. It took me only 4 songs to realize that Manowar is a total gimmick, there is nothing besides the image which holds this band together and their image is even bigger and more disgusting than that of Marilyn Manson!!! I say fuck'em!

Regards, Andy.
